Why You Should Hire An HVAC Contractor

Home & Garden Articles

Over time, a home's central air system may not be able to keep up with the increasing heating and cooling needs of the household. If this is true in your home, you will need to contact an HVAC contractor. An HVAC contractor will be able to perform maintenance and repairs on your home's central air system in order to ensure that you are comfortable all year round.

The Job Of An HVAC Contractor

HVAC is an acronym that stands for heating, ventilation, and air conditioning. HVAC contractors specialize in the maintenance, repair, and installation of heating and cooling systems worldwide. In residential applications, HVAC contractors typically deal with smaller-scale AC units and furnaces than those found in commercial and industrial environments.

When your home's central air system is not working as it should, the best solution is to hire an HVAC contractor. HVAC contractors have all of the tools, supplies, and knowledge needed to solve any heating or cooling problem.

Common Cooling Issues

There are many common problems that plague the central air conditioning units that are on the market today. These problems include:

  • Poor airflow
  • Diminishing air quality
  • High temperature

If your air conditioning unit is experiencing any of these problems, then the problem lies with the evaporator. The evaporator, located inside of the home, is responsible for supplying the chilled air to the home. This is done by filling the evaporator's metal coils with cold refrigerant, then blowing air through the coils and into the home's duct system.

Over time, these coils can become covered with dust and grime. This decreases the airflow of the unit, as well as the quality of the air. Since the metal coils cannot function properly when dirty, the temperature of the air leaving the evaporator is not as cold as usual.

To solve the problem, an HVAC specialist can perform an evaporator service. To clean your evaporator, an HVAC specialist will:

  1. Access the evaporator.
    • The evaporator is located above the furnace, hidden behind a metal housing called a "plenum."
  2. Scrub the coils.
    • The metal coils are scrubbed with a special cleaning solution and a wire brush.
    • Proper safety equipment is required for this step, as the harsh chemicals can damage both skin and airways.
  3. Replace the air filter.
    • The old air filter will be discarded, and a new filter will be slid into place.
  4. Clean the drain pan.
    • The drain pan will be removed and cleaned, and the drain tube at the center of the pan will be scrubbed and cleared, if necessary.
  5. Seal any leaks.
    • Refrigerant leaks can be sealed with special tape or adhesive.

This is a simple service that can drastically improve the performance of your air conditioner. Hiring an HVAC contractor ensures that the job will be done correctly, and the right tools and supplies will be used to get the job done.

Furnace Maintenance

Furnaces typically require much less maintenance than air conditioning systems, mostly because there are fewer components in a furnace than an AC unit. However, simple maintenance does need to be performed to keep your home safe and warm during the winter.

To service your furnace, and HVAC specialist will:

  • Check for gas leaks.
    • If you have a gas-powered furnace, the HVAC specialist will need to check the various valves, pipes, and joints for any signs of a gas leak.
    • Gas leaks are extremely dangerous, and can cause extreme sickness in all of the occupants of the house.
  • Inspect the heating element.
    • For electric furnaces, the internal heating element can be easily accessed and inspected by a contractor with the right tools.
  • Clean the air filter.
    • A clogged and dirty air filter can decrease airflow and become a health hazard.
  • Light the pilot light.
    • The pilot light should only be lit by a trained professional, as gas leaks and dusty furnace interiors pose a tremendous fire risk.

Simple Maintenance, Practical Results

As you can see, hiring an HVAC contractor to service your home's heating and cooling components is the best way to ensure that your home is comfortable throughout the entire year. Even more importantly, these services will ensure that your central air system is safe and able to supply clean, fresh air to your home.

For the Love of Gardening

My name is Joyce Williams. Thanks for stopping by my website. I hope to provide you with some valuable information about gardening. I live with my family on an acre of land just outside of the city. While not huge, an acre provides me with plenty of room to do what I love: gardening. I have several different gardens on our property. There’s my rose garden, wildflower garden, vegetable garden, and dessert garden. We have lots of trees and shrubbery; there’s even a small pond complete with koi fish on our property. As long as the weather allows, I spend time every day outside in the yard. It doesn't matter what time of year, there’s always something to be done. I’m going to share some tips and information on keeping a garden alive and fresh. Enjoy!
